Executive Summary: In veterinary medicine, recognizing an emergency early can mean the
difference between full recovery and tragic loss. Here is what every dog and cat parent must know about
recognizing urgent crises.
1. Difficulty Breathing or Choking
Labored breathing,
open-mouth panting in cats, blue or pale gums, and extended neck posture require instant oxygen therapy.
2. Gastric Dilatation-Volvulus (Bloat / GDV)
Common in deep-chested
large dogs like Labradors, GSDs, and Great Danes. Symptoms include a distended hard abdomen, unproductive
retching, pacing, and salivation. This is a surgical emergency.
3. Seizures or Sudden Collapse
Episodes lasting more than
2 minutes, multiple seizures within 24 hours, or inability to stand upright signal acute neurological or
cardiovascular distress.
4. Toxin or Poison Ingestion
Ingestion of rodenticides,
human painkillers (paracetamol/ibuprofen), chocolate, grapes/raisins, or toxic houseplants requires immediate
decontamination.
5. Inability to Urinate
Frequent trips to the box
or yard with zero urine output, pacing, and crying indicates a blockage that can turn fatal within 24 to 48
hours without catheterization.
